The Treaty Itself
On September 1847 the Mexican army was defeated and the fall of the capital city that made Mexico surrender to the United States. So the U.S. and Mexico had to negotiate to make a treaty. At first the negotiation had a lot of problems mostly from the Mexican sense of honor and stubbornness to admit defeat. The President James K. Polk had sent Nicholas P. Trist, to join him in the hope that with conferring full powers and full instructions the two could take advantage of any in Mexican resolve to push through negotiations. They managed to establish communications with the Mexican government by the way of British legation officials in Mexico City. By that time Santa Anna resigned, and the rest of the Mexican government fled. The Mexican congress, which split into a number of peace and war factions, did everything possible to avoid responsibility. They managed to persuade the Mexicans to send a peace commission to Mexico City and exchange proposals. The nation received the treaty with relief, and the Senate approved it after a few minor changes. Then the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was made. The treaty traced the boundary between U.S. and Mexico .The United States paid Mexico $15,000,000 for the construction of the boundary. The treaty help stop civil war in both Mexico and the U.S... It recognizes the annexation of Texas to the U.S. and cede to the United States Upper California.
